NURS 4440: Community Health Nursing Theory

This guide supports the NURS 4440 course at PennWest University.

Types of Assessment

Windshield Survey - A windshield survey is a systematic observation made from a moving vehicle. It can help you better understand either the community in general or a specific condition or aspect of it. Windshield surveys are particularly useful for observing large areas, and the aspects you are interested in can be seen from the road. Windshield surveys can be used to assess general community needs, such as to estimate the poverty level, or to examine more specific aspects of the community's physical, social, or economic makeup.

Community Assessment - A community health assessment is a state, tribal, local, or territorial health assessment that identifies key health needs and issues through systematic, comprehensive data collection and analysis. A community health assessment gives organizations comprehensive information about the community’s current health status, needs, and issues. In turn, this information can help with developing a community health improvement plan by justifying how and where resources should be allocated to best meet community needs.

Family Assessment - A family assessment identifies behaviors and conditions about the child, parent, and family to provide a greater understanding of how a family's strengths, needs, and resources affect a child's safety, permanency, and well-being. The assessment should also involve the extended family and support network.
